Federal govt urged to boost medical tourism
09 May 2007
A national lobby group wants the Federal Government to help strengthen Australia's medical tourism industry.
The Australian Tourism Export Council says the sector is already operating on an ad hoc basis in various parts of the country.
The council's managing director, Matt Hingerty, says a coordinated national approach could yield big dividends.
"There would be a whole gamut in the health sector from your simple spa treatments and health check-ups right through to surgical procedures," he said.
"It is not widely known that there is a significant number of beds that are not used in the private health sector and we believe it's a no-brainer to marry people who want to travel the world for health treatments with a holiday in Australia."
